With the rapid adoption of computerization in the 1970’s and 80’s, mainframes were the only option for major industries globally such as banking, finance, insurance, airlines, transportation, pharmaceutical, healthcare, government agencies, and many others. However, mainframes started to lose their luster due to major advances in technologies and especially with the onset of personal computers and servers. Many industries began to adopt newer technologies and decommissioned their mainframes. Mainframe technologies and COBOL, as the primary programming language, were no longer taught in most universities globally by mid 1990’s. This has resulted in a rapid decline of the talent pool with niche skill sets.
Mainframes are now often regarded as giant machines sitting in the museums and COBOL obsolete. However, the reality is that many industries are still relying heavily on mainframes as their major application backbones. This is due to their impeccable security, high availability and fault-tolerance nature of the technology. This is particularly true for the banking industry which handles voluminous transactional data and 24x7 nature of the business.
iTAc is a mainframe specialist, providing software services to both international and local financial institutions in Malaysia. iTAc works closely with the clients in the development, maintenance and support of legacy systems such as credit card management systems, core banking, loans, trade finance and other financial applications, including related software testing services. iTAc keeps these legacy systems in top-notch conditions, hence keeping the dinosaurs alive!
iTAc Resources Sdn Bhd (iTAc) was incorporated in 1997. It seized the opportunity to specialize in the mainframe environment and to provide software services to banks in Malaysia while many companies exited from this niche market. iTAc envisioned the fact that despite newer technologies, mainframes would remain a critical backbone for banks globally. Furthermore, because recent and current generations of IT professionals are no longer exposed or skilled in mainframe technologies, the demand for services from the clients would actually increase as a result of severe shortage of resources with mainframe knowledge.
Initially iTAc found it difficult to gain the trust from behemoths such as banks. With perseverance, iTAc managed to land its first client which is a local financial institution that was in need of mainframe services provider. iTAc ensured that superior services were provided, which resulted to gaining the full confidence of the client. The business expanded rapidly after year 2000 when a few international banks selected Malaysia as their respective global IT centers. iTAc expanded rapidly with these international clients as it was recommended from one bank to another, due to its specialty and quality services.
Subsequently iTAc setup to provide the only structured mainframe COBOL training program for fresh graduates in Malaysia to meet industry demand for this niche skill set. To date they have trained more than 350 graduates since 2003, many of them are holding senior posts in various banks and IT companies.
In 2005, iTAc was granted MSC Malaysia Status and a new entity, iTAc MSC Outsourcing Sdn Bhd, was set up. MSC Malaysia status is recognition by the Government of Malaysia through the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), for ICT and ICT-facilitated businesses that develop or use multimedia technologies to produce and enhance their products and services. It is also a mark of world-class service and achievement and act as passport and gateway to a host of privileges granted by the Government of Malaysia to the business entities. iTAc was granted MSC Status under Shared Services & Outsourcing category. iTAc was awarded by MSC Malaysia as an Outsourcing Champion of Malaysia under the National Key Economic Area of Business Services.
With a strong track record in creating value for banking and financial institutions in Malaysia, iTAc is able to respond effectively and efficiently to new business situations, providing end-to-end IT solutions that are geared to meet the clients’ ever-evolving needs, thereby adding value to their businesses.
